Closing Up Your Home for Vacation
If you are away from your home for an extended period, you should note the following suggestions to prepare your home. Many more suggestions are available in online articles and the use of any of these suggestions would be for you to decide and implement.
Please have someone check on your home on a regular basis.
Security: Notify your local HOA & Police department of your departure plans; i.e. who has access to your home, and/or who is to be contacted in case of emergency. It is good to have a neighbor or family member check the house periodically while you are away.
Water Valve: You should turn off the domestic water main supply valve. Water valves are usually located either in the mechanical room or basement.
Hot Water Heater: Turn to OFF or to LOW depending on how long you may be away. It is not necessary to drain your water heater tank. You may consider closing the gas valve leading to the hot water heater.
Thermostat: We recommend leaving your thermostat set at 60 degrees in winter and 80 degrees in summer. It is highly recommended to leave it ON.
Toilets: Close lids so water does not evaporate.
Dishwasher: Close door, but DO NOT LATCH OR LOCK IN POSITION.
Floor Drains: Cover all drains to help eliminate any sewer gases from coming back up into the home due to evaporation from lack of use.
Garbage Disposal: After the last of the water is run, pour ½ to ¾ cup of vegetable oil in the disposal to keep the blades lubricated and prevent the small amount of moisture that is always present on the bottom from causing rust. This works for floor drains also.
Hoses: Please remove all exterior hoses. Note: Hoses must be removed every winter to prevent the bursting of pipes.
