Sump Pump Suggestions

Your home is equipped with a sump pump in your basement. This pump is designed to catch all the subgrade groundwater below and around your home. Drain tile is installed around the perimeter of the foundation and beneath your basement floor and is attached to your sump pit. This allows the water an easy path into the pit where it can be pumped up and out, away from your home. There may not always be visible evidence that the pump is working but no need to be alarmed. This may mean that there is sufficient drainage away from your home and little groundwater below your home. However, it is always good to test your sump pump to ensure that it is in fact still operating for the times that it is needed during a heavy rain event. As mentioned above it is most often operational during and just after a storm, which is also when you are most likely to have a power outage. For that reason, it is strongly recommended that you consider installing a backup system for the sump pump. There are several varieties to choose from and we suggest you speak with a plumber to determine which one suits you best. It is also strongly recommended you never store anything of value directly on your concrete basement floor. Place on shelves or on blocks to protect them, in case of a sump pump backup.
